I’m Dani and I’ve been a passionate husbandry aquarist at various facilities across the country for almost 6 years.
Before I got my first full time animal care job I got my Bachelor’s of Science degree in marine biology and psychology from California State University, Northridge. While in school I spent a semester in the field on Catalina Island at the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies. I also completed an internship at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium and volunteered at the Los Angeles Zoo.
After graduating I moved to Waco, TX to be a full-time aquarist at the Cameron Park Zoo. For the four years following I worked at the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco as an animal trainer and worked free contact with river otters. I have also lead the target training for a variety of aquatic creatures such as seven gill sharks, rays, and moray eels.
After moving to the Midwest, before I got my current position, I worked in private aquarium maintenance, interned at Oceans of Fun, and was a seasonal zookeeper at the Brookfield Zoo.
One of my favorite parts of the job is I get to SCUBA dive in all sorts of large tanks and with all sorts of creatures. At my current facility (Discovery World in Milwaukee Wisconson) I am building up a jelly culturing system, which has been a project I’ve loved doing. I also run a successful online blog about being an aquarist and my various jobs/adventures.
